Why 5 Minutes Is Enough
Your nervous system doesn't need a retreat to shift state — it needs a clear enough signal, held long enough for the body to register it. Five focused minutes, done with intention, is often enough to move you from an activated, scattered state into something steadier. This isn't a replacement for deeper regulation work; it's a tool for the moment you actually need one — before a hard conversation, after one, or anywhere your body is running faster than your day requires.
The Reset
Minute 1 — Land. Sit or stand with both feet flat on the ground. Notice five things you can physically feel: the chair, your clothes, the air on your skin. This isn't relaxation yet — it's just telling your body where it is.
Minutes 2–3 — Lengthen the exhale. Breathe in for a count of four, out for a count of six. The longer exhale is doing the work here — it's the signal your nervous system actually listens to. Don't force depth; just keep the exhale a little longer than the inhale, for about fifteen to twenty rounds.
Minute 4 — Name it, don't narrate it. In one sentence, name what's happening in your body right now — "tight chest," "racing thoughts," "jaw clenched." Naming a sensation (not the story behind it) helps the nervous system process it as information rather than threat.
Minute 5 — One small, deliberate movement. Roll your shoulders back, unclench your jaw, or simply stand up and sit back down with intention. A completed physical movement tells your body the activation has somewhere to go — it doesn't have to stay held.
When to Use This
- Before a meeting or conversation you're dreading
- Right after one that didn't go the way you hoped
- Any time you notice you've been holding your breath without realizing it
- As a bridge — not a replacement — before a longer sound or coaching session
This reset is a first-aid tool, not a cure. If dysregulation is your baseline rather than an occasional visitor, that's exactly what deeper work — coaching, sound healing, or both — is built for.
